Peter Ireland, grandson of Pte Peter Ireland, was a teacher of Classics at McLaren High School, Callander. His main interest is Ancient Art. However, Peter is also a passionate traveller and has travelled extensively, mainly in classical lands. As a consequence he is an active member of the Royal Scottish Geographers’ Society in Stirling and often shares stories of his travels through their Travellers’ Tales programme. He claims to have no military background whatsoever!
Abstract:
Peter talks to a memoir written by his grandfather, describing service with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers in the 1890s and early 1900s. He soldiered in Burma, India and South Africa, enduring hardships in the jungles of Northern Burma and fighting Afghans on the march to relieve Chitral. Later as a Reservist he encountered modern weaponry in the Boer War. Peter reads extracts from the memoir, which is unusual and of some interest, being written by a private soldier.
