Derek Casey was born and educated in Glasgow (including Glasgow University), Derek Casey became Chief Executive of the Sports Council in London in the early 90s. He was instrumental in establishing the Sports Lottery Fund in 1993, the current network of Sports Institutes and, in 1997, the World Class Performance programme so much in evidence from Sydney onwards and, in recent weeks, at the Olympics and Paralympics. He has been Chair of the Council of Europe’s Committee for Sport, Chair of the World Leisure Organisation and now is its Chair Emeritus. He was the Bid Director for Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. He continues to be an adviser on the economic and social benefits of sport, leisure and tourism in many parts of the world especially in Africa and the Far East.
