I have recently retired from farming a 700 acre hill and upland farm near Portpatrick having taken over the farm aged 17 on the death of my father. My son Andrew is now the 4th generation to farm this land. In 1990 I was elected to the position of President of NFU Scotland – a position I held for 6 years. My talk will include the major changes I have seen in agriculture over the years and give some thought to future trends in the industry. Subsequently I was privileged to be involved in other public appointments including Chairman of Dumfries and Galloway NHS, Commissioner of the Northern Lighthouse Board and for 5 years I was Lord Lieutenant of Wigtownshire.
