Dermot was born, educated and graduated in medicine in Glasgow. Rapidly aspiring to a career in Infectious diseases he became a lecturer, then in 1977 undertook post-doctoral studies at Yale University, Connecticut. Appointed a consultant in 1979 first at Ruchill then Gartnavel hospitals, his special interests were new and emerging infections, tuberculosis and – on its emergence – HIV/AIDS. He was a member of various regional and national committees pertaining to new infections and the risks to marginalised and high prevalence groups. He published 80 scientific papers and 13 book chapters. After retirement in 2006, he undertook locum and medical volunteer work in the Peruvian Amazon, the Ssese islands, Uganda, and with the San Bushpeople in the Kalahari, Namibia. He is interested in history – esp. prehistory – and art.
