Dr Peter Worthington, a professional statistician, returned to academia in the 1980s after serving in the Royal Air Force. Later, in 1994, he and his wife bought the Isle of Barra Hotel on the Isle of Barra. After selling the hotel in 2006 they settled in the Borders in the village of Broughton – the birthplace of John Buchan’s mother, Helen Masterton. Also, their house (the former Free Church Manse – used by John Buchan’s father in 1870s) is opposite the former John Buchan Centre (which in 2012 moved to Peebles as the “John Buchan Story”). So, being “surrounded” by John Buchan lore, he became involved in the John Buchan Museum and is currently the Chairman and a Trustee of the Museum! He first read “The Thirty-nine Steps” at the age of 13 and most of his other works since then!
