Michael Burrows

Professor Michael T. Burrows is a marine biologist at the Scottish Association for Marine Science in the Scottish Marine Institute, Oban, Argyll.  In his own words:-

“This talk covers my science from the major avenues of research through to the ways that scientific research is assessed, funded and makes an impact on society, business, and governments. Seashore paddling is mainly how the work is seen by others, and while sometimes this makes a convenient cover story, the real value is in the insights into life in the ocean. Climate change has given these studies greater urgency, and I will discuss how long-term observations of the seashore (and by extension, the ocean) show us how the animals and plants that live there are changing as the climate warms. My real ambition is to show how looking at nature on the local scale can tell us much about the global scale of change. The findings of this work underpin the immediate need for everyone to engage with the impending impacts of climate change.”
