Charles Grant

BRIGADIER (RET’D) C S GRANT OBE

Born in April 1948, Charles Grant was commissioned into the Queen’s Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons) in 1968.  Various appointments as a major included that of company commander at Sandhurst and Chief of Staff of a brigade in Northern Ireland.  He was awarded the MBE for the latter. He commanded the 3rd Battalion of the Ulster Defence Regiment and was awarded the OBE.  In1996 he was promoted to Brigadier and commanded the 51st Highland Brigade in Perth.  During this period he settled just outside Perth.  His last appointment in the Army was as the Director Land Warfare.  He retired from the Army in June 2002 to take up the appointment of Chief Executive of the Highland Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association. He retired from this post after five years in 2007 to pursue other interests. He has had a number of books published on military history and wargaming and enjoys battlefield tours.  He is a Vice President of Combat Stress (the Ex-Servicemen’s Mental Welfare Society) and President of the Queen’s Own Highlanders Regimental Association. Brigadier Grant is married to Liz and they have three children.  He is the historian for the 51st Highland Division website.  His talk on “The Road to St.Valery” will trace the story of the 51st Highland Division in 1940 culminating in the surrender of the Division at St.Valery.
